We packed up the Jeep and headed north to Kentucky for the long weekend, made longer by a teacher in-service day at Blair's school. We took the day off on Friday (since one of us would have to stay home with her anyway), and drove up in the morning so we'd arrive in time for lunch. We had a great time relaxing, going to the zoo, taking in a Reds game, and watching the annual WEBN Fireworks show over the Ohio River (on television of course, ain't nobody brave enough to take three toddlers into all of that!)

Checking out some murals in the Student Center at NKU! |
We took the girls for a stroll through Northern Kentucky University on Friday and they spent most of the day playing with Danielle's old Barbies and raiding the VHS cabinet. On Saturday we got our Alabama gear on in anticipation of their first game of the season (Mike is the Bama fan and has taught Blair how to say "Roll Tide!" when they're on TV)

Ready to cheer on the Crimson Tide! |
Mike and I snuck off to a Reds game in the afternoon, likely our last of the season. It was my first Reds game ever without Jay Bruce on the roster, and our outfield seats just didn't feel the same without him. We soaked up some warm sun, saw a great game, and heard some pretty awesome stories from the season ticket holders around us - just a few days before, one of them had received a pair of Billy Hamilton's cleats straight off his feet at the end of the game! It was a lovely break from being parents - we don't get many dates these days with how busy things are and no babysitters nearby.

I miss you, Jay! |
We took the kiddos to the zoo on Sunday and got to see a baby giraffe, flamingos, lions, bears, monkeys, and penguins - or as Blair calls them, "fen-gah-weens." Best toddler word EVER!
Blair and C walked hand-in-hand through the zoo almost the entire day, stopping only a few times to rest their little legs in the strollers. They were giggling at the animals together, yelling "let's go!" and having an absolute blast. I love it when they're together, it's the cutest thing.

"Take my pishure too, mama!" |
After the zoo we came home to watch the 40th annual WEBN fireworks show, put on by the famous Rozzi Fireworks company out of Cincinnati. The display is synchronized with music on the WEBN radio station and usually lasts about 45 minutes. When we were all younger people, we actually watched it from the riverbank and you can actually feel the booms in your chest. It's an amazing show, and this one was extra special because it was the 40th year!
Jeff rigged up a TV from on the deck and we put pillows and blankets in the empty baby pool for the girls to snuggle up and watch the magic. They tested out the TV reception with a little Mickey Mouse while we waited for coverage of the fireworks to begin, and even had some ice cream cones to celebrate the end of a busy, adventurous summer!
