Kentucky Derby

Happy Derby, y'all!

We may be Tennesseans now, but this little lady has Kentucky in her blood. Mike's family has been in Kentucky for several generations... I lived in Louisville for four years, so that has to count for something too, right?! Every year we gather 'round the television to take in the pomp & circumstance of the Kentucky Derby, choosing which horse we'd like to take it all and giggling at all the hats.

Those are my Yankee genes, right there.
This year, Blair was very excited to wear Mama's sun hat and her riding boots, and take her little filly out for a spin the yard. She hollered "giddy-up!" and "We're gonna win the Derby!" as she galloped around the yard. The adults toasted champagne, and Mike shed a little tear as we listened to "My Old Kentucky Home," and then we shouted at our horses as they burst out of the gates.

Blair's pick, Irap, came in 18th place. Mike chose Practical Joke and I tapped Irish War Cry for the win, but they came in 5th and 10th, respectively. Maybe next year one of us will pick the winner. For now, we'll just stick with the little jockey in our yard!

"Weep no more my lady, oh! Weep no more today!
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home,
For the old Kentucky home far away."
