Ballerina's Big Night

Saturday, May 20, 2017

A star has been born. Our little prima danced in her first ballet recital this weekend and hasn't stopped talking about "the big stage" since. We are so proud of her for being brave in front of a room full of people and for doing her best and having a blast with her friends!

I wouldn't be a proper photog-mom if I didn't go overboard taking photos of her sweet little dress and those tiny ballet shoes. The glittery pink sequined ensemble was topped off by an enormous pink bow clip and tights, and I tried to clean off as much dance floor dirt from her shoes as possible for the big day. These little shoes have seen nearly an entire year of use since she sobbed through her first summer class at two years old. It seems a little silly now to fawn over a pair of dirty toddler ballet shoes, but in just one, three, five years from now, I'm going to miss the smallness of it all. They just grow up so fast.

Still inspired by the Pretty Presets: Moms in the Picture project, I set up my camera for some "getting ready" photos. Blair was thrilled to play with my makeup brushes while we curled her hair and pulled it into a half-pony for the show. I truly cherish these candid moments - posed photos in cute outfits in a glam location is something I'd love to do on a more regular basis, but this is our normal. Bathroom accouterments and all!

We arrived at Harpeth High School in Kingston Springs with enough time to get her in her costume and lined up with the Tutu Brigade. They spent the whole show backstage together, eating Goldfish and watching Frozen on a brave moms' iPad, until it was finally their turn to shine. The lights came on and there they were, in a single-file line, each clutching a teddy bear for the big Teddy Bear Picnic number.

Blair lit up as soon as the music started. They had practiced every week for months to prepare for the show and she remembered more of the moves than I thought she would. They were all so cute - and there was only one little ballerina meltdown, so I think it was a success!

My mom got a video of the actual performance while I watched and snapped photos. The quality isn't the best, but she's third from the left and her personality certainly shines through!

At the conclusion of the 90-minute show, all the dancers came out for their final curtain call. Blair was so excited to be back out on the stage that she couldn't stay away from the limelight. She upstaged the school director's speech by coming as far forward as possible to wave at the crowd and had to be corralled back to a safe position. Such a ham!

The dance school had a red carpet set up for the girls to truly feel like stars. The girls' teacher from school even came - on a Saturday - to watch them, and they were over-the-moon excited to see her. They kept saying "Miss Tonya came to our dance show!" and giving her hugs. We are all so proud of the little ballerinas and can't wait to see what their Ballet Princesses class has in store for the summer session!

Miss Tonya!

And because one video is never enough - here is the Me Two's Teddy Bear Picnic rehearsal. Blair is the fourth from the left, and this was her first time up on a big stage. She was bit by the performance bug in this video, she was itching to get back up there for the real deal!
