Rock Island State Park

We're finally starting to get a taste of fall weather here in Middle Tennessee and last weekend we headed two hours east to Rock Island, Tennessee to see a gorgeous waterfall at the Rock Island State Park. The 883-acre park is home to the 30-foot tall Great Falls waterfall on the Caney Fork River below the Great Falls Dam on the Eastern Highland Rim.

We first stopped at an overlook across the Gorge at the site of a 19th century mill. We continued to the "beach" at a calmer area of the River away from the rapids, where Blair threw rocks and splashed until she tripped over a rock and tried to drown herself fell face-first in the water. Luckily, I packed more than one set of clothes for her and we headed over to the Caney Fork River Trail. The wooded trail followed a path upstream and downstream from the falls. We popped Blair in the Lillebaby and hiked down some boulders to sit at the foot of the falls, dip our feet in and soak up the sun.

The water cascading down the rocks was so cool!
Dipping in her little toes and tossing rocks!

We're absolutely not dysfunctional. Nope. Not at all.

I decided not to bring my real camera, for fear of smashing it on a boulder, but I wish I had. The scenery was so pretty and it would have been cool to play with the waterfall and motion blur, but the iPhone worked well enough. We stopped off in Murfreesboro for some Outback Steakhouse on the way home to watch some football. It was a fun little adventure and a great way to welcome cooler weather. Hello, fall!
